Federal Release Paths
The Federal Bureau of Prisons holds people serving federal prison sentences and manages release through institutions and Residential Reentry Management arrangements. A person may leave BOP custody at sentence completion, enter community confinement as authorized, or move into another authority's custody. A locator result marked released or not in BOP custody answers only the BOP question. Another detainer or new case can produce continued confinement elsewhere.
Claiborne County has no identified physical BOP prison. The federal system is listed because a county resident or defendant may have a separate federal case, or a county release sheet may name a federal receiving agency. A transfer from Claiborne County Jail to a federal custodian is not community release. The county record should state the destination, while the federal record continues the custody trail.
| Federal event | Correct interpretation | Source |
|---|---|---|
| BOP released status | No longer in that BOP custody event | BOP locator and records |
| USMS transfer | Federal pretrial custody continues | Federal court or USMS district |
| Residential reentry placement | Federal sentence administration may continue | BOP or RRM record |
| ICE detainer | Immigration custody may follow | ICE locator and ERO |
Search BOP Release Records
The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. Search by BOP register number when known. The locator also accepts DCDC, FBI, or INS identifiers, or a name search narrowed by race, sex, and age. A matching result may display the register number, age, race, sex, release date, and a location or status.
- Confirm that the last known case or sentence was federal. A county arrest alone is not enough.
- Search by the strongest available identifier. Use the exact committed name when searching without a number.
- Compare the result's identity fields and record the displayed status and release date exactly.
- If the result is absent or incomplete, determine whether the person was in USMS pretrial custody rather than BOP custody.
- Check the federal docket or contact the appropriate custodian when another hold or later case is possible.
BOP Release Locator Contact
BOP's public locator is the first route for a former sentenced federal prisoner. Its data caveats matter. Sentence and release information may change, and older records have limits. Preserve the search date, identifier, status wording, and release date. For an official record beyond the locator display, use BOP's agency records channels for the identified federal file rather than asking Claiborne County to certify a federal sentence.

The BOP locator information and caveats help explain record scope. A released date is evidence about the listed federal sentence record. It should be reconciled with any federal docket event and a county release or transfer sheet when the person passed through Claiborne County Jail.
No Claiborne BOP Prison
No BOP institution was identified within Claiborne County. The relevant custodian is a nationwide federal system, not a local facility visitors can reach on Straight Creek Road. A federal sentence may be served in another state or region. The BOP locator's location field, not the defendant's home county, identifies the relevant institution or released posture.
The distinction prevents two common errors. First, a person booked at Claiborne County Jail is not automatically a federal inmate. Second, a person with a federal case may be in a contract jail under U.S. Marshals management and never appear as a sentenced BOP prisoner during the pretrial phase. Start with the case type and last custodian.
Federal Release Locator Fields
The BOP locator offers two broad search routes. Identifier searches accept the register number and other listed federal identifiers. A biographical search uses name plus demographic filters. Exact spelling and aliases matter. The result must be tied to the right person before the release date is used.
A displayed release date may be historical or may reflect the current sentence computation available to BOP. Record the label without embellishment. BOP warns that data can lag. A change in sentence computation or agency reporting can alter the displayed information. For an older case, locator coverage and archival limitations may require an agency record request.
| Locator field | Use |
|---|---|
| Register number | Links the result to the federal person record |
| Name | Confirms committed identity and spelling |
| Age, race, sex | Helps separate similar names |
| Release date | Shows the federal date label supplied by BOP |
| Location or status | Shows the BOP institution or released posture |
USMS Custody Is Different
The U.S. Marshals Service custody explanation describes federal detainee management. A person awaiting federal trial is commonly under USMS authority and may be housed in a contract county or regional facility. The Marshals Service does not provide a comprehensive public name locator comparable to BOP.
Use the committing federal court docket, defense counsel, or the appropriate USMS district contact for that phase. The federal docket may show detention, release, judgment, and commitment events, though it does not replace the physical custodian's exit record. If Claiborne County transferred the person to USMS, request the county destination and transfer time. Then continue with the federal record.
Note: BOP and USMS are federal channels with different custody roles, so a failed BOP search does not resolve a pretrial detention question.
Claiborne Federal Transfer Check
For a person last seen in Claiborne County Jail, begin with the sheriff even when a federal matter is suspected. Ask whether the exit was community release or transfer. Request the booking number, release or transfer timestamp, authority, destination, and receiving agency. The Claiborne County Jail release record path sets out that local process.
If the receiving agency is BOP, search the locator. If it is USMS, use the federal court and Marshals channels. If the sheet names ICE, use the immigration locator instead. Agency names should not be treated as interchangeable. A person can move among systems while never experiencing community release.
The local Circuit and Sessions Court record may explain a county charge but cannot certify a separate federal case. Likewise, the BOP locator cannot show the precise physical exit from the county jail. Reconcile records by person, time, case, and receiving authority. That yields a defensible chain.
After Federal Prison Release
A BOP release date does not state whether another authority immediately assumed custody. Look for a detainer or destination in the federal and local records. Immigration custody, state warrants, or another case can change the practical outcome. A transfer into Residential Reentry Management may also represent a different stage of federal sentence administration rather than an unrestricted return home.
For a historical federal release, retain the BOP locator result and obtain the court judgment or docket entry as needed. The judgment sets the sentence. BOP administers the term and supplies the custody status. When the person also had a Claiborne booking, the sheriff's record documents only that local event. Each source should be asked the question it is equipped to answer.
- BOP custody
- Federal prison custody for people serving sentences managed by the Bureau.
- USMS custody
- Federal detention management, often before trial or during transport.
- Community confinement
- An authorized federal placement that may still be part of sentence administration.
- Detainer
- A request or hold that may lead to another custodian after one agency's release.
Identity matching deserves care in a nationwide search. Use the register number from a judgment, commitment, or prior BOP result when possible. If only a name is known, compare every displayed filter and the federal case dates. Do not merge two people because their names look alike. Save the exact result and search date before seeking a formal record.
A federal judgment gives the court sentence. BOP gives custody administration and locator status. The docket may show later sentence changes or supervised-release proceedings. Supervised release is a federal court term that follows prison in applicable cases. It is not BOP incarceration, and a released label does not say whether court supervision remains active.
When no locator record appears, check the time period and custody role. Coverage begins with federal inmates from 1982 forward. A recent pretrial defendant may be under USMS authority, while an older case may require archival research. Spelling or identifier errors also cause misses. Follow the federal case rather than guessing from a county roster.
Document Federal Release Searches
Keep the official locator URL, query date, register number when available, and exact BOP wording returned. If the federal status later changes, those notes preserve what the agency reported at the time. Pair the locator result with the court docket or an agency record before describing the final custody outcome.
For a Claiborne County transfer, also retain the local booking number, exit timestamp, destination, and receiving agency. Those details connect the county event to the correct federal system and prevent a transfer from being mislabeled as community release.
